Girly 21st Cheetah Birthday Cake

This cake was done for a girl who turned 21 years old. I actually knew her since she was a little girl so reality set in that I'm getting up there lol. Anyway she contacted me a few weeks ago, and said she wanted Cheetah print on her cake with red velvet, and she left the rest up to me. I like when I'm given creative control, it gives me room to be creative! I started out by baking two layers of red velvet cake, and then I made the buttercream frosted. Once The cake cooled I filled and iced the cake with the buttercream, and let it set. While it set I made Marshmallow fondant and colored it to the different colors needed to make the cake. After the cake was covered with the fondant, I ended up with something like this.
Once I had a plain cake I was ready to decorate. I made the edible paint and started painting on my cheetah print. Once the paint dried I made the make-up accessories out of fondant. The lips were made out of a candy mold. Thanks to my friend Corn for helping me out. I had him on the phone 5 am sending him pictures of every step just to make sure it was right! The birthday girl lovvvvveeed her cake! <--Those were her words lol

Brown and White zebra diaper bag Cake

This a Zebra diaper bag cake covered in homemade MMF with handmade fondant baby sneakers and the bottle was made from a candy mold.
I did a desert Bar in which I made  custom cakepops, cupcakes, and chocolate covered pretzels, and lollipops that tied the whole look together. I also customized the frames,  with the expecting parents picture. It was a lot of work, but fun seeing all my creations come to life!

Betty Boop Cake

My friend came to me, and told me she wanted a Betty Boop cake for her younger sister surprise 21st birthday party. Of course I said sure (eventhough I didn't have an idea on how to do it). I wasn't sure if I wanted to chance ordering an edible image, since I never recieved the last one on time. Therefore, I came across a new technique called a buttercream transfer. It was fairly easy, and I loved the way the cake came out. I made Betty African American, and made edible lipstick and nailpolish.
I heard the birthday girl loved her cake so much she didn't let anyone cut the cake. She took the whole cake home. When she finally cut the cake she said it was really good. Next time I'll add some cupcakes so the guest can have some cake as well lol. ; )

Graduation Time!

This graduation cake was made for one of my best friends Fallon for her graduation party.
The cap is cake as well, with an edible bow, and diploma on the side.
I'm so proud of her because she worked really hard as a mother who worked, and went to school full-time. Trust me I know it's not easy wearing many hats, and wearing them well!
Honorable mention goes to my other friend Patrece whom received her masters in psychology, and my friend Jennifer whom graduated from law school this year as well. All my circle of friends are smart, beautiful, and talented!
Fallon enjoying her cake!

Hand painted Leopard print cake with edible vanilla shoe

This cake was made for my mom's 45th birthday. The cake is covered in purple fondant and hand painted with black, gold, and brown leopard print. The shoe is made from vanilla candy mold  and hand carved with a knife.

I wanted to do something special for mom's birthday cake.  My mom is everything to me, and is not only my mom, but my best friend. She had me when she was only 16 years old while my father was sent to federal prison when I was 3 months old. My mom was suppose to be a statistic, but she was determined to have a better life for herself. She finished highschool and went on to get her degree. At 21 years old she became a home owner, owning her own co-op. She is now the head of fiances for the department of Social Services. She is one person I will forever admire for her drive, her Independence, and her ambition. I definitely appreciate all the things she has instilled in me, that's why I'm the woman I am today!

Happy Birthday Mommy!

Step in the Name of Love!

These assorted cupcakes with Vanilla edible shoes were made for the NYC Chicago Style Steppers Weekend. My aunt Dolores Brunner is a board member, and ask if I can make some cupcakes for one of the events in the park. I decided since it was a steppers'event I would add edible shoes to the top. I even tested out some cookies and cream cupcakes for the 1st time shown below...

I asked one of steppers if the cupcake taste like cookies and cream (she started shaking her head no) which made me nervous. She then said (while eating the cupcake) " I don't know, but all I know this is a damn good cupcake" lol
Now cookies and cream have been added to my list of flavors of cakes and cupcakes : )

Here's the NYC Chicago Style  Steppers in Central Park Stepping in the name of Love ; ). If you would like to take a class or have a stepper teach a class at your event. Please visit http://www.facebook.com/DejhaB#!/pages/New-York-Chicago-Style-Steppers/160271458117 for more information.

Here's me Chicago style stepping. I'm a woman with many talents lol ; )

Big Girls Rock Cake

Sexy Girl Image
A client came to me, and wanted me to make her birthday cake. She wanted something fun, and different to match her big personality. At 1st she said "Can you make a big sexy girl coming out of a cake?" I said I don't think so, because I don't know how to do edible figures. Then I thought maybe I can get an edible picture of a sexy full figured woman, and just put it on the cake. It sounds real easy, but with my life I'm always thrown a curve ball. The client sent me 3 graphics of sexy big girls. It was one that she really liked with a girl licking an ice cream cone ( The picture to the left). I had this whole idea of an ice cream sexy big girl cake. I had it all set, so I thought. I purchased an custom edible image off of etsy.com. When I sent the image to the lady she couldn't use the image, because of the low resolution of the picture. The only picture she could use was the 3rd picture,so my whole sexy ice cream cake went out the window. As the days went by, I noticed I still didn't receive my purchase.I contacted the lady, and she said the image should arrive soon. Of course I went into panic mode, because it was 2 days before I had to make the cake. I happen to be on Amazon, and see this book on making characters for cakes. I rushed ordered it, and received it the next night. After receiving the book, I thought maybe I should try to fulfill her original dream, and do a sexy big girl coming out of a cake. The day before I tried to make the edible lady, she came out looking like an old lady with no teeth ( I wish I took a picture) lol. I swear I wanted to give up, but I knew I couldn't. Once I did my prayer, and went into pressure mode, everything started to flow. The cake is a sexy full figured woman (I made out of fondant),sitting in a bubble bath, reading a book that says big girls rock. The moral of the story is sometimes the things in life we may want may not always be the best, and that there maybe something else much better in store for us. I didn't see it at the time, but it was a good thing the edible image didn't come on time.It forced me to  be more creative, and I ended up with a better cake ; )

Adidas Sneaker Cake

An old friend from high school contacted me,and wanted an Adidas sneaker cake for her boyfriend's surprise party. I said sure I can do that for you. If you have been following me, I just started making cakes 3 months ago. Therefore, every cake I have done so far is for the first time. After I got off the phone with her, I was determine to figure out how to make this cake. Once I got an idea, I was little confident, but still nervous. I think my family, and friends got tired of me talking about this Adidas sneaker cake. I was suppose to do a test run, but I never got a chance to do it. That just added to the pressure of making this cake. The day before the cake was due, I was in a music video. I think my friends got tired of me talking about this cake, the whole time we were shooting the video lol. The cake was actually easy. I used a sneaker template to carve out the shape. I froze the cake for a few hours, and then I was able to carve the shape, and spoon out the back. I then covered it with fondant, and added the details. I think it's amazing I'm able to do these cakes. I literally say a prayer, and then zone out. Every cake has it's challenges. Once I put it in my mind that failing is not an option, I have no chose but to "Deliver"

Girly Birthday Cake

When I started making my cakes,I would always show my co-worker pictures of my cakes. She would always say "It looks good , but do it taste good?" Therefore when her birthday came up, I figured I would finally answer her question by making her a birthday cake. This cake is vanilla, and yellow butter mix together. It's covered in a marble blue marshmallow fondant, with edible lipstick, and nail polish to match. I surprised her with the cake on her birthday. All my co-workers were excited to finally taste one of my cakes. All I know is I didn't hear a word in the room, because everybody was stuffing their face. One co-worker even said she was very impressed, because she was able to eat the fondant.(Tip: I always make homemade marshmallow fondant. It taste much better, and is cheaper than the store brand). My co-worker enjoyed her birthday cake, and has already placed an order for her daughter's birthday cake.

Yankee Hat Cake

During the year I take my mini me to dance class every Saturday morning. You  probably wonder how do I go to work, go to school, do cakes, and still manage to take my daughter to dance class every Saturday morning (I'm still trying to figure this out myself) lol. One of the moms heard I was doing cakes, so she wanted something nice for her husband. After she thought long, and hard she decided she wanted a Yankee hat cake and 27 cupcakes to match. I said "sure I can do that."Of course I never did it before, but I willing to give it a try for the right price ; ). Thank god I had a round ball pan that I ordered off of TV to make ice cream cake years ago, that I never used. I'm known for ordering things off of infomercials and never using it. I still can't get my chopper to work, but that's another story lol. The Yankee hat cake was actually easy. I went online to print out the Yankee logo, and just used the exact knife to cut around the fondant. The cupcakes are buttercream with fondant accents. Now remember I said the lady ordered 27 cupcakes right? My daughter wanted to help me so bad, so I told her to count out 27 cupcakes for me. Well I didn't double check, and it was only 25. As I was getting in the car to make the delivery I mention 27 cupcakes. My mom looks in the box and says "That doesn't look like 27 cupcakes". Long and behold after counting twice it was only 25. Thank god I made extra cupcakes, so all I had to do was quickly decorate 2 more cupcakes. I'm learning between my mother dropping my sister cake, and my 5 year old not telling me the right amount of cupcakes,I'll have to hire some more people in the future lol ; )

Purse Cake

When my little big sister ( she's 5'9 which is taller than me) turned 13 I knew I had to make her a special cake. She loves the color pink, and she's a girly girl like me. The best kind of cake I figured, would be a pocketbook cake with the accesories to match her fun personality.I had so much fun making this cake, and it was easy. Everything is edible including the glasses, the nail polish, the charm bracelet, the lipgloss, and ipod.I made everything by hand. As soon as my mom left my house she called me 5 minutes later. My heart dropped when she told me they dropped the cake. You would have thought it was my birthday, because I was ready to cry lol. Come to find out it didn't fall  on the floor it fell over on itself. I know what I did wrong after ordering "Sweet Luxuries" Designer bag Cake DVD ( I learned so much). I didnt have the right support, but I won't tell my mom that. I will forever make her believe she is a speed demon, and she is the reason why my sister's cake I made until 4am fell over ; ). PS as I'm writing this, I'm realizing my mom dropped my daughter's 4th birthday cake on the floor a year ago. As soon as I told my daughter her GG dropped her auntie's cake she said "again"! she said "remember when she dropped my birthday cake mommy"lol. I know who not to have as my delivery person when I make it big ; )

A little about Dejha B

My name is Dejha B, and I have  always been a creative person since a little girl. Since the age of  5,  I was always that little girl in the school plays singing and dancing without a shy bone in body (My mom has tons of stories to tell about that) lol. At the age of 9, my 2 friends, and I started a dance group called D.W.A (Dancers With Attitude). We even won 3x on the Showtime at the Apollo in Harlem. Then at the age of 17 I decided to pursue a dream of rapping, in which I made a name for myself in the underground rap community. Rapping also lead me to co-host my own radio show. I know,I know, you are probably saying "when will she get to part about the custom cakes" lol. I was just giving you a little background of myself, so you can see that anything that lets me express myself is for me. I'm a true believer that you should never put yourself in a box. If you want to try something go for it, you never know what can happen. Now for the past year and half, I decided to go back to school, so I can become a lawyer ( I Know a little left field from what I was doing, but that's something else I discovered I love). I think my family, and friends gets a kick out of all my crazy ideas, but at the same time they respect that I always go after what I want in life. For the past year and half I was feeling like I was losing my creative side. My long days were consisting of waking up super early, taking my daughter to school, going to work full-time, and then going to school at night 4 days out the week. 6 months ago I knew my daughter was turning 5 yearsold, and I wanted to do a Candyland theme.I wanted alot of cupcakes and candy all over the place. Party planning always excites me. I took a Wilton basic decorating class for 4 weeks for decorating cupcakes. I was the girl in class who brought in the Betty Crocker Icing, and store bought cake ( I know a little sad right?) lol. I didn't really take it seriously, because I just wanted to decorate cupcakes. Towards the end I would look  at every YouTube video, and cake blog, and figured maybe I should give it my best. Once I did that I discovered I had a hidden talent! Therefore 3 months ago (May 2011) I made my daughter's birthday cake, and ever since then I've been making customs cakes for family, friends, and friends of friends. I'm self taught, but have learned alot of things along the way.Through this blog I will take you on my journey of cake making, and will even share tips/tricks I've learned along the way. I will also give you a story behind every custom cake. If people only knew all the craziness that happens when I'm making a cake. I hope you enjoy the ride, because as my family and friends know, you never know what to expect from me!
